Dina, as someone who has had their own controversies with their mother, I found this such a stunning, emotional and truthful read. Your depth as a photographer and writer always inspires.
This was so beautiful, and I related to it so much. My mom and grandma could not understand my career choice at all (photography). When I started writing as a journalist later, it wasn't real to them either. They accepted it but definitely weren't thrilled about it for most of my life, even here in the U.S. in the 2010's. I'm so sorry you had to make up a profession when talking to your grandma. :( I swear, photography is the most painful of all career choices - I think those who stick with it are truly called to it, because it requires a strong spine and much sacrifice, humility and persistence.
Thank you for sharing your story. Mother-daughter relationships can be so complex. I, too, have regrets as my mother died when I was in my very early 20s, and I still had a lot of growing up to do. She passed away two days before Mother's Day. I'm proud of your resilience, and your creative focus, Dina.
So bittersweet. Mother’s Day always fills me with so much regret and pain. My mother taught me photography, but she also pushed me to be a doctor. Perfect read for today. Thank you
Dina, everyone has regrets of some kind. I’m sure your Mom probably had some of her own. But in the end, she was proud of you and what you had accomplished, so those missing Mother’s Days are probably harder for you now, than it was for her then. ❤️

Also, your work is stunning and I'm glad you stayed with it despite all the pushback. You are so talented!
Very moving and touching, Dina. Yes, she would be so proud. (And, as I mentioned the other day, your artistic talent extends to your writing.)
Thank you Daniel

That was quite a stunning read on this day. My mom was an art teacher and always encouraged my creativity.
Your mother was a beautiful soul, who nurtured another beautiful soul.
I love reading your posts.
Sigh… Hugs dear Dina. Happy Mother’s Day to all.
Thank you so much for sending your writing out onto the internet! I really resonate with your thought process. ✌🏼

Did you ever take your grandma's portrait
