You are determined to poke people hard 😂 I can only imagine some of the impassioned comments you might receive from people willing to die a small hills. I just hope the Leica Cult doesn’t get you 😬😂 And just one serious note: the world doesn’t need another picture of African school children in or around a one room schoolhouse. Africa is a huge diverse place with 1.86 billion people. There are other pictures to take. In fact, let Africans take them and teach Americans and Europeans other ways to see and understand Africa and its people.
Excellent post, as always. And this is coming from someone whose 2nd photo book (on Cuba) was filled with portraits of old people and kids. Thankfully, no Street photography sight gags! Whew!
Excellent as always. I carry the camera as you suggest, but it goes across my neck too, like a sling. Why? I have had unhappy subjects grab it on 2 or 3 occasions.
The camera-carrying advice is a good way to smash the LCD. Repairing that takes longer than unbending a skimpy lens shade. Conversely, the “Adjectives” do’s is excellent! It turns the “lens” into the maker and the viewer. Thanks for the always thought-provoking and entertaining posts! 🍷
Guess anything could happen, but in 10 years or running around like that I never made a scratch. But I would bump my lens against things all the time when I wore the lens out, which is why I switched.
I was thinking about a small 35mm lens, but I get it. The best approach depends on the size of the lens (and camera) ... and of course, personal preferences 😊🍷
Wow! This post has really blown up your Instagram comment section. Your views are illuminating as are the reactions.
I, too, love Sally Mann’s work -- and I was thinking of her when you mentioned how boring photos of other people’s children are. But Mann is in a class by herself!
My grandmother’s friend had an active hatred when the women in her coffee klatch foisted snapshots of their grandchildren on her. One day, after they finished showing off their little darlings, she said, “would you like to see my pride and joy?”
Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a magazine clipping of an advertisement for Pride & Joy dish soap.

The Leica cult is too snobby to care about someone's peasant thoughts, but I'm always ready for pushback.

I have the same from Cuba, and in B&W!

And thank you!

I didn't realize how to carry your camera is a divisive issue. 🍿
🤣🤣🤣
