Personal vision is the terrifying holy grail of photography. It is an adventure of self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and fear. What if I don’t have one? Where and how do I acquire it? What if someone else’s vision is more unique and authentic? It took me a while to realize that instead of a monolithic entity, personal vision is a collection of repeating visual and conceptual themes. It is a potpourri of all the subjects that bring you joy to photograph, from grand themes such as the idea of leisure to specific scenes like catching people in windows at night or looking for one person out in social situations. One of the motifs that I have been obsessed with for years has been the image of a peeing dog.
