In last week’s post I attempted to answer the tricky question of “What makes a good portrait?” by sharing four personal epiphanies. This week I will go deeper into one of them — the new frontier of virtual photography. Remote shooting is the process that I've been most excited about over the past couple years, and it has helped me change my own practice in surprising ways. So, let's start with the basics.

What is virtual/remote photography?

Quite simply, it's magic. Or at least that's how it felt when I took my first remote portrait. Using only my laptop and the subject's smartphone, I was able to photograph someone in Lviv, Ukraine from my apartment in NYC. It was exhilarating.
